This detailed commemoration of the American contribution to Allied victory in World War I was compiled by the American Battle Monuments Commission (chaired by John J. Pershing) and published by the Government Printing Office in 1938. After reviewing the contents, the nearly two-decade lapse between the end of the conflict and the issue of the volume might be better understood. The contents offer an exhaustively detailed look at the various battles involving American servicemen. Fifteen different chapters cover a broad array of topics, including operations (organized by region), services of supply, the Navy, and the distribution of cemeteries and war memorials. Dozens of images, sketches, and maps (including three fold-outs of important battlefields) aid in illustrating the well-researched, though inevitably somewhat biased, narrative. Three maps in the back pocket cover the front lines in the Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne battlefields.
