Map of Krypton’s Old World Hemisphere and Map of Krypton’s New World Hemisphere

This wonderfully illustrated map was published in a 1971 issue of Giant Superman. The two-page image highlights the geography of Krypton – the home world of Superman, the Man of Steel. The planet is shown divided into two hemispheres – the “New World” and the “Old World”. Each shows a primary continent with scattered islands, flanked above and below by large bodies of ice in the Arctic and Antarctic zones – surprisingly close to the geography of Earth. Numbered locations within each map relate to the surrounding illustrated panels. Spectacular geographic features and technologically advanced cities are shown and labeled. Of particular interest is ‘Vathlo Island – Home of [a] highly developed Black Race.” Little can be found in the DC Comics Universe about this location, but it’s an interesting example of how race is treated in comic canon.
