This striking pair of original book leaves—the allegorical frontispiece and title page—serves as a grand visual overture to one of the most significant works of the 18th century. Utilizing a dense array of symbolic motifs, the imagery reflects the encyclopedic scope of the atlas: Cartography, the Classics, maritime science, agriculture, and celestial phenomena are all personified through expertly engraved figures. Published in Amsterdam by François L’Honoré & Compagnie, these sheets belong to the first edition of the monumental seven-volume Atlas Historique (1705–1720). While the maps are attributed to Henri Chatelain, the work was a massive collaborative effort, also involving the scholar Nicolas Gueudeville (both duly credited). The title page, printed using an expensive red and black ink process, signals the prestige of the publication. More than a mere geographical reference, this scholarly work offers a remarkable synthesis of cosmography, history, religion, and ethnology. The inclusion of descriptive text alongside intricate charts and diagrams provided 18th-century readers with a comprehensive “worldview” that bridged the gap between the Renaissance tradition and the dawning Enlightenment.
