This finely detailed outline of Florida uses a series of numbers and symbols to showcase the progress of federal surveying by the General Land Office. Nearly the entire state has been measured in some capacity, with a notable exception around the expansive Everglades and Big Cypress swamps. Large land grants include Forbes’ Purchase and the Arredondo Grant. Notable features of interest include several frontier forts, a handful of military roads, an inset of the Florida Keys, and several independent towns inhabited by defiant bands of Seminoles who refused to be relocated to Oklahoma (Prophet’s Town, Sam Jones Town, and Waxi Hadjos Town). The image was approved by the Surveyor General of Florida, John Wescott. Published in Washington in 1854 to accompany a Congressional Report by the General Land Office.
