[Collection of Five LGBTQ Maps from The Advocate]

$26.25
This collection of somewhat simple street plans was issued in various editions of The Advocate between 1975 and 1977. Each map, originally issued as part of the Trader Dick’s pull-out section, identifies gay-friendly venues like hotels, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. The image is surrounded by numerous advertisements – an important source of revenue for the publication. The collection includes maps of Washington, D.C., Atlantic City, Dallas, Hollywood, and San Diego. The Advocate is the longest-running and most influential LGBTQ publication in the United States, originally founded in Los Angeles in 1967 as a newsletter following a police raid on a gay bar. It transitioned into a large domestic news magazine known for its pioneering investigative journalism, political coverage, and cultural reporting, becoming a crucial voice documenting the movement for queer rights and visibility. Trader Dick and Friends was a specific personalized advertising section of The Advocate. Its provocative images and risque content were considered a liability for the intended national reach of the publication, so it was eventually dropped from the content. Source.
