Historical Map Warm Springs Indian Reservation

$30.43 $50.21
Encompassing over 1,000 square miles in north-central Oregon, the Warm Springs Indian Reservation was established in 1855 and today is home to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs (members include the Wasco, Tenino, and Northern Paiute). This lovely pictorial map presents a color cartographic history of the reservation, dating back to the 15th century. Dense blocks of text are carefully situated between illustrated vignettes that showcase important events and influential individuals. Various routes – explorers, railroads, highways, etc. – are noted throughout the image. Collectively, the map is quite respectful towards the indigenous inhabitants, with several variations in skin tone reflecting the multi-ethnic composition of the American West. Compiled by Ralph M. Shane and Ruby D. Leno, with artwork credited to Shane (who worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs). Published, probably in Warm Springs, in April 1949 (dated, lower right). A second edition would be issued by the Oregon Historical Society in 1974.
