Almost two decades before the outbreak of WWII, this 1921 periodical asks, “Would China Profit By A Japanese-American War?” Other notable contents include a single-page map of Chinese railways (noting many foreign-owned), articles about the Returned Students (educated Boxer Rebellion indemnity payments), up-to-date market reports, tallies of imported articles, and numerous advertisements for Western products in Shanghai (automobiles, fashion, etc.). Millard’s Review (1917 – 1937) was a Shanghai-based weekly publication read mostly in the West, offering a unique perspective into Chinese history during a particularly tumultuous period.
