Let’s’ leave nothing but footprints.” This ephemeral form letter, information sheet, and sketched map was presumably sent to attendees of the upcoming July 2 & 3rd, 1988 Grateful Dead Show held at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine. The fans’ notoriety in drug use, littering, and general misconduct preceded the bands’ arrival, and this packet was likely issued via mail (possibly with tickets) to encourage good behavior. A one-page ‘Message to Deadheads,’ signed by the six members of the band, is followed by a short list of helpful information: clean up, camping is $5/day, no fireworks! The final page is a simple outline of venue, outlining parking, camping, vendors, and Katadin Homes/Oxford Homes (two manufactured housing lots – possibly used as short-term rentals). The hit ‘Touch of Grey’ (1987) brought the Grateful Dead back into the charts and the public spotlight, with public enthusiasm in the 1960s counterculture icons prompted by a resurgence of conservatism during the Reagan Era.
