This vibrant map of California presents almost 500 distinct and unique historic sites (each listed on the verso) across the cities, beaches, mountains, deserts, and rolling valleys of the Golden State. According to the legend in the lower right, four symbols generalize the approximate period of each location: Spanish-Mexican, Gold Rush, Agricultural Era, and the Commercial and Industrial Expansion. Vibrant illustrations in the negative space provide an stylized depiction of each era. The map also includes insets of major population centers throughout the state, including the California Mother Lode, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Monterey. The work was a collaborative effort involving several talented individuals. Historic research and descriptive notes by Phil Townsend Hanna and William Webb, with cartography by Lowell Butler, drawings by Gordon Brusstar, and color by Harry Diamond. Published in 1952 as part of Vol. 44, No. 12 of Westways, an official publication of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
