With good stamina, a sturdy bike, and this map, one could have cycled the German roads from Hamburg to Vienna in the early 1910s. Main thoroughfares are highlighted in red, linking primary urban areas and noting distances between points in kilometers. First and second-class routes are also shown, along with the borders of the German Empire and Prussian states (green). An impressive infrastructure of roads that would be put to good use by troops and refugees in the coming years. The map was designed by P. Krauss and published by the German Cyclist’s Association around 1912.
